Seeds and Sovereignty: How Culture and Cultivation of Seeds Connect
Join us at the St. Helena Farmers Market as part of their Lecture Series!
During the knowledge share, we'll share how people, place, and culture is important to investigate when saving seeds. In fact, connecting people, place, and culture is a large part of ethical seed saving to ensure seed sovereignty.
During the skill share, we'll teach you how to extend your garden skills by processing wet seeds from two heritage watermelon varieties. One is cultivated by the Tohono O'odham people of Central Sonora, Mexico, and the other vital to the resilience and cultural identity of the people of Jenin, Palestine.
Come and hear the stories of these people and places where their watermelons are beloved and grown. Stay to harvest these seeds so they can be returned to the people who steward them at Native Seed/Search and the Palestine Heirloom Seed Library.
